Loy Krathong takes place on the full moon of the twelfth month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which is November of the western calendar. This festival is believed to originate in an ancient practice of paying respect to the spirit of the waters.
Although there are many facets to the Loy Krathong Festival, including parades and placing floats in the water, this gallery focuses on the night lights.
You will embark on a three-fold adventure: watching thousands of air balloon-like lanterns float into the sky, landing who-knows-where; going atop a hotel overlooking Chiang Mai, Thailand while fireworks explode closely overhead; sitting by a river where more lanterns and fireworks are haphazardly lit; then to one of many shrines and celebrations strewn throughout Chiang Mai during this three-day festive holiday.
